Attawapiskat Stained Glass Back in the News

Five years ago, Northern Art Glass welcomed two visitors from Attawapiskat for an intensive 10 day workshop to learn the stained glass process from start to finish. Jackie Hookimaw-Witt and her husband Norbert came with the object of designing and fabricating the first of 6 large windows for St. Francis Xavier Catholic church on the reserve. Each window would feature the designs of native artists. Jackie and Norbert would take their skills back to Attawapiskat to teach others in a community building project and spiritual healing. This window, fabricated at NAG with lots of helping hands,...

Stained Glass Rescue

After more than five years of neglect, Northern Art Glass was able to access Trinity Anglican Church in Brockville to remove a treasure trove of stained glass windows ahead of the bulldozers. Home to roosting pigeons and bats, the derelict church owned by a developer, required an environmental clean-up just to enter the building. Ten windows were documented with sizes, photographs and templates before being crated and...

The original design concept by Anne Carlyle Design was fabricated and installed by Northern Art Glass. A photographic image of a tree, digitally printed on green tint acrylic, forms the backdrop for the donor names. Northern Art Glass had to develop a custom solution to...

Stained Glass in Peril

Trinity Anglican Church has been an historic landmark in the heart of Brockville, Ontario for 137 years. The church has fallen on hard times. The congregation reluctantly moved out to merge with another Anglican parish in the town several years ago leaving the heritage building including 10 stunning stained glass windows behind. The church building and land were sold to a developer who will be building an 11-storey condominium overlooking the St. Lawrence River on the land beside the church. The developer has been trying for 3 years to find a buyer for the church, hoping it could be...

Harry Horwood, A 19th Century Glass Master

I first made the acquaintance of Harry Horwood in 1986, more than 100 years after his stained glass studio opened for business on Bank St. in Ottawa, Canada. Northern Art Glass Inc. was in the midst of a massive restoration of stained glass at the Notre Dame Basilica on Sussex Drive. We began with the great West Window, 32’ high x 16’ wide, removing and crating up the stained glass panels for delivery to our studio. During the restoration process, we discovered an inscription; Harry Horwood, Ottawa, April 1879. I was intrigued by my first encounter with Harry. The Catholic Diocese at the...
