West Block Beauty

One last look at the finished J1 stained glass transom from the West Block before it is crated up to await installation on site. This arched window went through a massive restoration process at Northern Art Glass. Over 50 piece of glass were repainted to match the original damaged panes before the panel could be reassembled. It looks pretty good for a circa 1870 stained glass window. The J1 door and frame are currently undergoing a full refurbishing treatment by another heritage contractor before the completed entryway can once again shine on Parliament...

West Block Beauty

Northern Art Glass continues year two of a restoration of historic stained glass windows at the West Block on Parliament Hill. This is a beautiful eight pointed ‘rose’ window close to five feet across. The window opening is prominently located above the South entrance overlooking Wellington Street. This original painted and stenciled window dates to the early 1870’s. Our restoration is the first intervention in 145 years. Several of the large petal shapes and most of the outer border panes are replacements painted to match ones which were too badly damaged to save. Our...

Stained Glass Renewal

Northern Art Glass is currently restoring heritage stained glass on Parliament Hill and rebuilding 100+ year old church windows from St. Paul’s Anglican, Almonte in our shop. Not every project may be a major contract for our firm but the satisfaction of a job well done is rewarding just the same. These photos illustrate the Before and After of a decorative door panel. The wind took the door and slammed it against a mailbox to the detriment of the leaded glass. One of our talented craftsman replicated the pattern and glass to match the original. The customer was thrilled. A small job...

Joan of Arc – Stained Glass Masterpiece

This dramatic vision of Joan of Arc riding into battle has just gone through a major restoration in the studio. The arched panel in the original frame (refinished) measures 78” x 55” and was originally installed in the Jeanne D’Arc Institute on Sussex Drive, Ottawa. The Catholic Sisters of the Institute operated a residence for young working women from 1914 to the 1970’s that offered safe, inexpensive accommodation. The institute was housed in a pre-Confederation stone building that spanned the block from York St. to Clarence. This building is now a heritage NCC property. There is...

West Block Glass Restoration

Heritage glass restoration may seem like a glamorous occupation. Touring areas of historic sites that the public never sees. Uncovering glass treasures from a bygone era. The painstaking team effort to bring them back to their former glory and, finally, the reveal. That is satisfying! The work being carried out on this steel window frame, one of two removed from the West Block on Parliament Hill, illustrates some of the care that must taken to protect workers from hazardous materials present on those heritage sites. Northern Art Glass and Asbex-Heritage Grade workers make up the crew in...

Antique Painted Glass

This stunning entryway of ornate doors and delicately painted glass panels (circa 1820) was purchased in France and now graces a fine home and estate overlooking the the Ottawa River. The original leaded glass was in poor condition with several missing panes. Northern Art Glass undertook the careful restoration and releading of the panels. New floral panes were painted to match. The antique glass actually has a slight blue tone which was certainly evident when we tried to match it with clear restoration glass. Luckily we have a collection of ‘unique’ glass that has come our way...
